MTA celebrates Fair Share impact on state budget
MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy released the following statement on the FY25 state budget signed by Governor Maura Healey.
The state budget signed by Governor Maura Healey reflects victories that members of the Massachusetts Teachers Association have been fighting for to ensure that every family has access to equitable and high-quality public education, from prekindergarten through college.
Educators led the fight that resulted in voters approving the Fair Share Amendment – a commonsense surtax on income above $1 million that pumped $1.3 billion into the FY 2025 budget for public education and transportation. Fair Share revenue funded such important initiatives as free community college and universal, free school meals, valuable investments in quality of life and economic mobility for all residents in every community.
The MTA is disappointed, however, that Governor Healey reduced the state budget by an amount equal to the tax cuts she handed out to the state’s wealthy residents.
Still, there is much to celebrate in the budget, such as increased per-student funding for districts, support for literacy education and financial aid to public universities.
The budget also continues to fund Tomorrow’s Teachers, an innovative approach to both increasing and diversifying the educator workforce.
MTA members will continue to remain at the forefront of work dedicated to making public education in Massachusetts the best it can be for every family.
