MTA lauds expansion of public higher ed financial aid

public higher education advocacy day

Massachusetts Teachers Association President Max Page attended Governor Maura Healey’s announcement today that the state is creating the expanded MassGRANT Plus program, which will allow more students to attend a public college or university.

Page released the following statement following the announcement:

“The Massachusetts Teachers Association fought for and won more funding for our public schools through passage of the Fair Share Amendment, and we applaud the creation of MassGRANT Plus, expanding financial aid to students attending public higher education.

"The MTA fought for and won more funding for our public schools through passage of the Fair Share Amendment, and we applaud the creation of MassGRANT Plus, expanding financial aid to students attending public higher education."

“This is a major step forward in the fight for educational equity, making it possible for more low-income and middle-income students than ever before to seek out, and complete, their higher education degrees right here in the Bay State. This will benefit our economy and communities by making it possible for young people growing up in Massachusetts to stay here, find good jobs here and make their homes here.

“With the U.S. Supreme Court overturning federal affirmative action last June, the expanded MassGRANT Plus will help make public colleges and universities more diverse by knocking down financial barriers that have been preventing BIPOC students and working-class students from pursuing higher education.

“To further invest in our public colleges and universities, making them debt-free, and allow more students to pursue higher education in high-quality settings, the Legislature must pass the Cherish Act to further invest in our public colleges and universities.”
