Proposed New Bedford charter deal is 'unacceptable'

Protest charter proposals at 1/22 BESE Meeting

Jan. 21 MLK Day action is canceled due to extreme weather conditions. Those who can should attend the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education meeting to protest the New Bedford and Haverhill charter proposals. The meeting is at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at DESE, 75 Pleasant Street, Malden.

Charter would drain vital funds

MTA President Merrie Najimy issued the following statement on the New Bedford charter school proposal recommended by Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley today:

This proposed deal involving the Alma del Mar Charter School and the City of New Bedford is unacceptable. It fails to alleviate our most fundamental concern: The charter school will drain much-needed funds from the New Bedford Public Schools. We wish that state education officials would put half as much energy into supporting and funding our district public schools as they put into finding new ways to force communities to accept — and pay for — privately run charter schools.
