We need your help to protect the Question 2 win
The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is accepting public comments on its proposed regulations pertaining to the Question 2 victory to replace the MCAS as a high school graduation requirement. Here's the proposal. We highly encourage educators and allies to comment on these proposed regulations. Click here for the public comment form. Your voice is imperative to protect this important new law.
Please note a few sections in the proposed regulations that we believe need to be altered prior to final implementation. Go here for a full version of MTA’s initial response. The main points we are making include:
30.02 Definitions
- We will oppose the implementation of a final exam or project in the “showing mastery” definition that would reinstate a single, high-stakes assessment as the graduation requirement.
- We will suggest changing the “full credit” language to ensure consistency throughout the state and protect students from passing a class but not meeting the competency determination on a technicality.
30.03 Standards for Competency Determination
- We believe flexibility is needed for additional classes that cover the same standards to count as meeting the competency determination. This will impact special needs students and other specific cases.
- We will argue for the removal of a provision to allow the MCAS to be used in some circumstances as the competency determination. This goes against the intent of the law to stop the MCAS as the measure for a competency determination.
Educators and the voters spoke decisively to support this initiative. We need your help to make sure the implementation mirrors their will.
