MTA statement on President Trump’s directive allowing ICE agents to make arrests in schools

MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy issued the following statement today:

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms President Trump’s directive that would allow ICE agents to raid and arrest students in our public schools. It is repulsive to our shared common values, and this cruel policy shatters the trust that families place in our educators and our public schools as safe havens and inflicts lasting trauma on innocent children.

The bedrock of public education in Massachusetts, enshrined in our state constitution – the oldest in the nation – is that every student is welcomed, regardless of wealth, language, religion or immigration status. To have ICE agents raid and make arrests in our schools is an affront to these values and a direct attack on the sanctity of our shared mission to nurture and educate every child.

As educators, we stand in solidarity with immigrant advocates, community allies and all who fight for justice and humanity. We will fight against this policy with every tool at our disposal and remain committed to ensuring our public schools are spaces of learning, belonging and safety for all students."
