MTA launching open-access journal dedicated to rethinking education

Revolutionizing Education is committed to presenting research aimed at ending inequities in education and promoting practices that empower educators and communities.

Revolutionizing Education is a new, open-access journal of peer-reviewed articles on education policy and practice launching this year as a partnership between the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries.

The journal is committed to presenting research aimed at ending inequities in education by examining existing structures in our schools and colleges and promoting practices that empower educators and communities.

To ensure the integrity of material presented in the journal, Revolutionizing Education is using a double-blind, peer-review process. Likewise, this new online journal will be available to all at no cost.

Revolutionizing Education is now accepting applications for reviewers. Authors may submit articles for consideration as of March 1.

“MTA educators are dedicated to creating schools and colleges that transform lives and communities,” MTA President Max Page said. “Revolutionizing Education is a bold undertaking by our union to generate and disseminate new approaches to strengthening public education’s role as the foundation of democracy, and as a central force for nurturing future community members, citizens and workers. This is an exciting endeavor that will tap into research on education happening within our own union and state, as well as worldwide, and make these findings available to everyone at no cost.”

The journal’s editorial board states among its goals: “We prioritize rigorous critiques of existing educational structures, offering innovative theoretical frameworks and empirical research that envision education as a tool for liberation rather than the reproduction of inequality.”

UMass Amherst Libraries is already publishing a number of open-access journals and welcomes the partnership with the MTA.

“The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries is pleased to partner with the Massachusetts Teachers Association to publish their new journal, Revolutionizing Education, as part of the Libraries' growing open access journal publishing program,” said Library Publishing & Institutional Repository Librarian Erin Jerome, who manages the open-access journal publishing program for the UMass Amherst Libraries. “As part of this open publishing program, the Libraries will provide the MTA with the technical infrastructure and expert support to gather, evaluate and provide free, open and long-term access to the research appearing in the journal to users from around the world.”
