More than 50 state legislators endorse YES on 2 campaign
The YES on 2 campaign celebrated a major milestone today as more than 50 Massachusetts state legislators officially endorsed the ballot initiative to replace the MCAS graduation requirement. This powerful show of support underscores the momentum the campaign has built in recent weeks, drawing widespread backing from educators, students, parents, and community leaders across the Commonwealth.
The wave of legislative endorsements adds to the broad and growing coalition calling for an end to high-stakes testing in the Bay State. The widespread support from legislators highlights the urgency of replacing the harmful and discriminatory graduation requirement that undermines state standards and disproportionately impacts students of color, English language learners, and those with learning disabilities.
“With over 50 legislators joining our efforts, the YES on 2 campaign is growing stronger than ever as we fight for students, teachers and the strength of our state’s high education standards,” said MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy. “These legislators understand that the MCAS graduation requirement is not serving our students or our communities, and their support shows that Massachusetts is ready to embrace a more inclusive and balanced system of accountability that upholds our state’s high standards and gives all students the opportunity to succeed.”
The legislators backing the campaign come from a diverse range of districts, representing urban, suburban, and rural communities across the state. Their endorsements reflect the widespread belief that high-stakes testing, like the MCAS graduation requirement, puts undue pressure on students and teachers alike, while failing to account for the diversity of student learning styles and backgrounds. With more than 50 state lawmakers on board, pressure is mounting for other elected officials to get on the right side of this critical issue.
In the coming weeks, the endorsed legislators will integrate into the campaign, helping mobilize supporters and engage voters to ensure a resounding victory for Question 2 on Election Day.
