MTA opposes proposed misuse of Fair Share funds
MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy issued the following statement regarding Gov. Maura Healey’s proposed misuse of Fair Share funds
MTA members are vehemently opposed to Gov. Maura Healey’s proposed use of Fair Share funds to balance the FY24 budget.
Healey is asking the Legislature to approve her use of $225 million of Fair Share revenue to backfill spending from the previous fiscal year that should have been covered by other revenue sources.
Fair Share funds must be used to build upon the existing spending for public education and transportation, and not become dollars lost on balance sheets.
Gov. Healey’s supplemental budget proposal defies the will of the voters and the spirit of Fair Share, which is raising money to grow our public education and transportation systems.
Educators fought for passage of this progressive tax that is raising nearly $2 billion annually for new initiatives that improve public schools and colleges along with allowing for new investments in public transportation. The MTA will defend Fair Share revenue from all inappropriate uses.
