MTA Virtual Forums: AI in Education

MTA Virtual Forums: AI in Education

Make plans to participate in three virtual forums on AI

The series will feature research, as well as examples of how educators in K-12 and Higher Ed are exploring the use of AI in the classroom.

All forums will be held online from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Forums include:

  • On Aug. 6, An Introduction to AI with Girls Who Code – featuring Michaela Burger from Girls Who Code.
  • On Aug. 7, Bot Fun: Adapting to AI’s Arrival in Our Classrooms – featuring Jesse Dukes from MIT Teaching Systems Lab.
  • On Aug. 13, Prompting Artificial Intelligence for Student Success: Nurturing Responsible Usage of Generative AI – featuring Maurice Williams Jr., Ph.D., a professor at Bridgewater State University and Jimoh Fatoki, Ph.D., a professor at Roger Williams University.

These virtual meetings are free and open to all MTA members.

AI online forums are free to MTA members

Since the launch of ChatGPT, conversations about the use of generative Artificial Intelligence tools have exploded in all industries. In this series of virtual forums, MTA members will learn about how AI works, hear about some research into how educators and students are exploring the use of AI, and learn from two professors who are using these tools with their students

An Introduction to AI with Girls Who Code with Michaela Burger

The tech landscape is changing. Artificial intelligence has expanded computer science and introduced complex new tools into every employment sector. At the same time, the gender gap in tech has widened, from women representing 37 percent of computer scientists in 1995 to only 24 percent today.

Learn about AI in education and how to build inclusive programs that equip students with the confidence and skills they need to make a positive impact on their community and careers.

This presentation will feature Girls Who Code Clubs, where third through fifth graders or sixth through twelfth graders of all genders learn how to positively impact their community through code and how to be brave and resilient – which has an impact on how they approach challenges and if they stick with coding in the years to come. Participants will explore the design of our programmatic model, participate in hands-on activities that you can take with you, and brainstorm ways to bring inclusive best practices, tips and tools to your community – no matter your level of coding experience.

Bot Fun: Adapting to AI’s Arrival in Our Classrooms with Jesse Dukes

Silicon Valley has unleashed a homework machine on educators everywhere. While they may one day prove beneficial, AI tools like GPT4 and DALL-E have created an immediate set of challenges for educators. Along with colleagues at MIT, Jesse Dukes has studied teachers’ efforts to adapt and leverage the benefits of AI, and will share insights and guide participants through a process of revising and adapting assignments in the age of AI.
