The MTA Summer Conference will be from Sunday, August 2 to Thursday, August 6, 2015, at a new location — the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Our new venue brings new possibilities for professional and social events, workshops and cultural programs.
In keeping with the 2015 theme, "The Schools Our Students Deserve," the conference will feature organizational development tracks and workshops that deepen participants' understanding of internal organizing, team and coalition building, diversity and cultural competence, and the assault on public education and public-sector unions.
UMass Amherst is the new site of the MTA Summer Conference.
New this year will be the MTA Organizing Institute, which is designed for teams from MTA locals and committees. It will help participants consider and plan ways to shift to an organizational model using deep internal organizing to bring about increased member involvement; develop a program of student and family engagement, community organizing and coalition building; and encourage a process of developing an analysis of the political, economic and regulatory environment.
The conference will also offer a wide variety of content and skills-based professional development workshops for teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators in several areas, including iPad and Google apps, classroom management, instructional practice and differentiated instruction. Facing History and Ourselves and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts will offer workshops.
In addition, committee-sponsored wine-and-cheese receptions, dances and ice cream mixers are on the schedule, as is the popular ED Talks, a TED Talk-style event in which speakers share their “big ideas” about public education before a live audience. The MTA Movie Loft will offer blockbusters and documentaries for those looking to kick back and relax in the evenings.
Online registration will be available in mid-May. In the meantime, check out our topical guide to the 2015 conference with workshops and tracks broken down by topic, category and sector. Price structure will remain the same.
We look forward to seeing you at UMass Amherst in August.
