Stand Up for Educators Across the Country

Greetings,

Haverhill Education Association members returned to school without a contract. This week, HEA President Ted Kempinski welcomed his members back with a fiery speech in the best tradition of labor. He told them:

“This year the HEA will undergo a dynamic shift. The focus is on building union power. To do that we must build our collective power one small action at a time. At the end of the day we are more powerful than we know. We control the labor in this district and we represent the future of the city. We must remind the district and city leaders of this power. If we support an initiative in our schools it will succeed. Together we will use it to improve our working conditions and our students’ learning conditions.”

The HEA is developing a robust organizing plan — the “HEArt of Haverhill Campaign” — to fight for more funding at the local and state levels. Join HEA members’
March for Respect at 6 p.m. on September 13 as they rally to demand the schools their students and community deserve.

In that spirit, members of
United Teachers Los Angeles completed strike authorization voting yesterday (results are expected later today), and educators in Seattle have voted to authorize a strike after contract negotiations between their union and the Seattle Public Schools failed to produce a deal over pay.

In the tradition of Labor Day, let’s stand in solidarity with educators all over the country on Tuesday, September 4, by wearing red to school on
National #RedForEdDay.

In solidarity,

Merrie
