Action is needed right away to support our last chance in this legislative session to increase school funding. A conference committee considering House and Senate versions of school funding bills is meeting now and must act before July 31.

Call your state representative and senator and ask them to urge the members of the conference committee to support the Senate’s version of An Act relative to findings of the Foundation Budget Review Commission. Let them know you support phasing in the increased funding over no more than five years.

The Senate’s version, spearheaded by Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz, would address this persistent inadequacy and inequity of the Foundation Budget by phasing in four key recommendations of the FBRC, those related to health care costs, special education, English learners and low-income students. It would generate more than $1 billion for public schools when fully phased in. The House version, led by Rep. Alice Peisch, only addresses the first two, leaving the other two for further study. It would generate about one-third as much money for public schools as the Senate version does.

Ask your state representative and senator to contact the conference committee members with this message: “Pass the Senate bill now!” If you live in a district served by a member of the six-person conference committee, ask him or her directly to support the Senate bill. The conference committee members are:Representatives Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley), Claire Cronin (D-Easton and Kimberly Ferguson (R-Holden), and Senators Sonia Chang-Díaz (D-Boston), Sal DiDomenico (D-Everett) and Patrick O’Connor (R-Weymouth).
