OVERVIEW

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) represents over 116,000 educators and nearly 400 locals across the state and employs over 150 full-time staff. Our members are teachers, education support professionals, counselors, social workers, bus drivers, and more in preK-12 public schools, and faculty and staff in the state’s public colleges and universities. As a member-driven organization and the largest union in New England, our collective power makes MTA an influential voice for educators, students, and their communities. MTA’s innovative approach to democratized bargaining, contract action teams, and rank and file organizing has resulted in groundbreaking gains for our members. And historic victories won through coalition efforts, such as last year’s ballot initiative raising taxes on the wealthy to fund public schools and colleges, have raised standards for communities across the state. DUTIES

The MTA Executive Director-Treasurer provides strategic leadership and management to advance the mission of the MTA, supporting governance, staff, and members to build a powerful rank and file statewide union.

Strategic Planning and Leadership

• Provide the vision, strategic direction, and resources needed for MTA to take its rightful place as a leading voice on PreK-16 education policy and as an advocate for the common good.
• Direct and supervise the management staff, building a strong team culture, fostering strong inter-divisional collaboration, and ensuring alignment among all staff with an organizational strategy to accomplish the goals and objectives set by the Board.
• Bring forward policy recommendations to MTA’s governance bodies to strengthen programs, campaigns, staffing, and fiscal sustainability and, as an executive accountable to the Board of Directors, ensure adherence to the bylaws and policies of the Association. Building Union and Rank and File Power.
• Provide the vision, strategic direction, and resources needed to foster the rank and file organizing, local activism, and leadership development that will build union power.
• Position the MTA as a major contributor to and decision-maker in the Massachusetts labor movement and as a powerful political force in the legislative and policy arena.
• Foster an organizational culture, in the workplace and in the union, that promotes collaboration and unity and centers the values of racial, economic, and gender justice. Fiscal Management and Employee Relations.
• Ensure the financial integrity and sustainability of the Association’s operating budget and reserves and serve as the custodian of all the funds, reserves, and investments, as well as providing oversight of the pension plan.
• Develop and administer the budget of the Association in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer.
• Exercise oversight of all staff, working with the organization’s three internal staff unions, to align their work with the strategic goals and objectives of the Board of Directors.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

• 5-8 years of executive/senior leadership and management experience.
• Deep commitment to a vision of a labor movement that advances racial, economic, and gender justice and a common good agenda.
• Deep commitment to public education as a public good and dedication to the rights of educators, students, and families.
• Demonstrated high level skills in budget analysis and management, including budget preparation and reporting.
• Strong organizational abilities including strategic planning, team building, program development, and effective systems implementation.
• Understanding of appropriate roles of governance and staff within a membership organization and ability to work successfully in an executive position accountable to an elected Board of Directors.
• Demonstrated experience in leading organizational change.
• Understanding of and commitment to dismantling systems of oppression such as white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy.
• Understanding of the collective bargaining process and the culture of unions; experience managing in a unionized workplace environment preferred. Salary commensurate with experience and generous benefits package.
