Urge your state senator to support budget amendments
The Senate Ways and Means Committee released its budget proposal for fiscal 2018 on Tuesday, May 16. The good news is that your advocacy is working: The Senate Ways and Means plan includes $37.8 million more than the House proposal for public higher education. But there are still a number of amendments that senators have filed that will help improve public education — and we need your help in urging your senator to co-sponsor these amendments.
The MTA-backed amendments would:
- Increase funding for our public schools.
- Protect our members from excessive health insurance cost increases through the Group Insurance Commission.
- Advance MTA’s K-12 policy bill in its entirety. The bill includes protections of teacher tenure, a prohibition on the use of student test data in teacher evaluations, and a moratorium on high-stakes testing, among other items.
