Educators sought for teacher-created, teacher-facilitated workshops

MTA educators are invited to develop their leadership skills and mastery of the Common Core State Standards as participants in the MTA Core Collaborative. The program is free for MTA members. Applications are due November 1.

The Core Collaborative, in conjunction with Teach Plus of Boston, will serve as a launchpad for teachers who want to work with colleagues to analyze, critique and develop unit and lesson plans that align with the Massachusetts Frameworks, which include the Common Core. Facilitators with expertise in the Common Core will help teachers learn about and develop their own best practices. 

This teacher-created, teacher-facilitated series of workshops will address issues relevant to participants' grades and subjects. Lessons can be brought to the classroom immediately.

The sessions will be held on five Tuesdays, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Dates are November 12, November 26 and December 3, 2013; and January 7 and 14, 2014. Dinner will be provided in the school’s media cafe.

Teachers completing the program have the option of receiving course credit from Endicott College, for a fee, or professional-development points.

At the end of the program, teachers will be asked to share their lesson plans on the BetterLesson website, and MTA will use lessons as examples in MTA training materials. 

Teachers are also expected to contribute five to 10 hours of "paying it forward" by providing guidance to other teachers in their districts, for example, serving as presenters at MTA workshops, or working with MTA professionals on materials about the Common Core and PARCC assessments.

Courses being offered this semester are Common Core in the Elementary Classroom (wait list only); Integrating the Common Core into Secondary ELA; Common Core in the Secondary Math Classroom; Middle School Literacy and Writing Strategies for the Common Core and Differentiated Instruction and the Common Core (K-8).
