MTA meets with Gov. Patrick

Governor Deval Patrick delivered a sobering message about the economic crisis facing Massachusetts and responded to questions from members at an MTA event in Natick on January 8.

The governor addressed approximately 250 MTA local leaders, Board members and staff for about 15 minutes, then fielded questions for 45 minutes about many issues, including when the state will make an offer in the higher education contract negotiations, what can be done to minimize education budget cuts, whether he is truly committed to collective bargaining and why he vetoed the retiree pension cost-of-living-adjustment bill last year.

Despite coming under fire from some speakers, the governor received warm applause when MTA President Anne Wass noted that he is one of five governors leading the charge for ensuring that the federal economic recovery bill includes substantial funding for public education and higher education.
