Romney vetoes retro pay increases

Late Friday evening, Gov. Romney sent to the Legislature a veto message regarding retroactive pay increases for higher education employees.

His message said ". . .I am also vetoing certain collective bargaining pay increases for higher education and UMass employees because they are retroactive to FY2002.  I do not believe the pay raises included in this bill for higher education state employees should be paid retroactively and am therefore vetoing these items."

Please e-mail or call your state representative and urge him or her to ask the House Speaker and the Chair of House Ways and Means, Rep. Robert DeLeo (D-Winthrop) to bring up these vetoes for an override vote on Monday, July 31, which is the last day of the legislative session.

Also, e-mail or call your senator and urge him or her to speak with the Senate President and Chair of the Senate of Ways and Means Committee, Sen. Therese Murray (D-Plymouth).

Your voice will be helpful. MTA lobbyists also will be calling for the override of the vetoes.
