MTA adds new higher education members

More than 1,200 higher education members of SEIU 888 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Boston and Lowell have voted to affiliate with MTA.

Those voting in favor of  MTA affiliation -- more than 89 percent of those voting -- represent approximately 2,200 SEIU 888 members who will be joining MTA.

The vote came as the result of an agreement between MTA President Catherine A. Boudreau and SEIU International President Andrew Stern, who concurred that certain members of SEIU 888 would be better served by a union with a stronger focus on higher education.

Following are the results of the mail-ballot vote, which was tallied on Nov. 10. "Yes" votes were in favor of MTA affiliation; "no" votes were in favor of remaining in SEIU 888.
