Helping Children in Need
The Massachusetts Child
Who we are:
Every day, educators regularly open up their wallets and their hearts for their students – “their kids.” The Massachusetts Child, a charitable corporation established by the MTA in 1996, was born out of that spirit of generosity. Each year, the Mass Child reimburses locals for expenses that directly benefit students in crisis and make it possible for them to succeed in school. Examples include:
- Medical expenses and dental procedures
- Field trips or educational activities
- Books, supplies and materials
- Outerwear, clothing or shoes
Gift certificates and gift cards given directly to students and/or their families are not reimbursable. Different districts have different needs, and we will do our best to help. Please contact us with your inquiry.
An application is not required. However, the Mass Child board requests that you send an email indicating that your local is interested in participating. The email should be sent to Mass Child President Christine Mulroney or MTA staff consultant Sarah Nathan.

HOW DOES MY LOCAL GET REIMBURSED?
After identifying a child with a need that meets the Mass Child guidelines, make the appropriate purchases using local association funds. Then submit a request for reimbursement signed by the local association president. Click here to download a reimbursement form or reach out to MTA’s Communications Division at 617-878-8265.
The reimbursement form must include proof of expenditures made between Sept. 1, 2013 and June 14, 2014.
WHEN SHOULD I APPLY, AND HOW QUICKLY WILL MY LOCAL GET REIMBURSED?
MTA locals can seek a grant at any time during the course of the school year, and reimbursement checks will be issued following board approval. The board meets several times during the school year to review and approve requests for funds accompanied by receipts. Each request is given careful and thoughtful review. (Based on past experience, there should be enough funding to accommodate all grant requests. However, requests from locals will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.)
IS MY LOCAL ELIGIBLE?
The grant program is open to all preK-12 MTA locals. Locals with 500 or fewer members may receive up to $750 per school year. Locals with more than 500 members are eligible to receive more – up to $1.50 for each member.
