DESE to offer a limited number of no-cost SEI Endorsement courses

Approximately 3,000 educators were unable to receive the Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement in the 2015-2016 school year through no fault of their own. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is planning to offer a limited number (100-150) of no-cost SEI Endorsement courses during the 2016-2017 school year.

Educators who will be eligible for these no-cost, state-offered courses are those who were required to earn the endorsement during their districts’ cohort window and who, during the 2015-2016 school year:

  • Enrolled in a 2015-2016 SY course that was subsequently canceled by the DESE;
  • Placed themselves on a waitlist for a 2015-2016 course but were not offered an open seat;
  • Applied for and were granted a hardship extension; or
  • Were assigned an English language learner for the first time during the 2015-2016 school year but did not have adequate time to enroll in a course.

The DESE is compiling a list of these educators and will notify them individually by mid-July of their eligibility and course registration procedures.

URGENT: Since schools and districts update information in the fall, core academic educators who were assigned ELLs for the first time during the 2015-2016 school year may not have been included. This also applies to administrators who were assigned to supervise or evaluate a core academic teacher of an ELL student for the first time during 2015-2016.

Superintendents and RETELL liaisons are currently updating their lists of core academic teachers who were assigned an ELL for the first time after Sept. 1, 2015, during their district’s cohort window.

If you received an ELL for the first time this CURRENT school year and were unable to register, please check with your principal, superintendent and/or RETELL liaison to ensure you are on the list of eligible educators for a no-cost course during the coming school year.

The deadline for updating this list is 4 p.m. on June 24. At that time, the DESE will finalize the list of educators who will be invited to participate in a no-cost SEI course in the coming school year. For detailed information and instructions, please click on the RETELL Advisory 15 link below.
