Show your support for Wisconsin educators at rallies on Tuesday in Boston and Springfield

Wisconsin educators and other public employees are fighting an unprecedented attack on their right to bargain. Come show your support for our fellow union members at rallies in Boston and Springfield scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22.

WHAT: Stand Up for Wisconsin Workers

WHERE: Springfield City Hall Steps or the Massachusetts State House in Boston

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 4 pm

BACKGROUND:

Thousands are rallying at the Capitol in Wisconsin to defeat Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to strip public employees of their right to bargain. After Democratic lawmakers left the state in solidarity with the protesters, the state Senate in Wisconsin failed to achieve a quorum – and the vote on Walker’s bill has been delayed. We are urging MTA members to show their support for Wisconsin workers and send a message to kill the bill!

Momentum in favor of the workers is growing. President Obama called Walker’s plan “an assault on unions.” The archbishop of Milwaukee and players for the Green Bay Packers are supporting the protesters. The New York Times editorialized that “unions should make their voices heard and push back hard against this misguided plan.” Let’s show Wisconsin workers that educators in Massachusetts support them, too!

Under Walker’s bill, public employees would be barred from bargaining about anything except wages, and any pay increase they win would be limited by the consumer price index. Contracts would be limited to a year, and union dues could no longer be deducted from paychecks. This is a blatant attempt to destroy public employee unions in that state.

The MTA is working with the Pioneer Valley AFL-CIO to put on the Springfield rally. The Boston rally is being organized by MTA along with several statewide labor organizations.
