High School Quiz Show launches second season

High School Quiz Show, the popular game show sponsored by the MTA, returns for a second season this Sunday, February 13, on WGBH channel 2 at 7 p.m. This year many celebrities, including Katie Couric, Phylicia Rashād, Alec Baldwin, Dennis Lehane, Mark Wahlberg, Noam Chomsky and Queen Noor, have pledged their support by contributing video questions.

The show will put 16 eastern and central Massachusetts public high schools in the spotlight. In the first round, Natick will face off against the team from Acton-Boxborough. The winners of this season will face off in a statewide championship against the winners of As Schools Match Wits, a co-production of WGBY and Westfield State University that the MTA also sponsors.

High School Quiz Show also has a Celtics tie-in this year. When the Celtics played the Detroit Pistons on Jan. 19, show participants from the first season, accompanied by new show host Billy Costa, had the privilege of greeting the players on the court during halftime. “I love interacting with teen audiences, and it’s a real thrill for me to step into this role with WGBH,” said Costa, who appears on the Matty in the Morning show on radio station Kiss 108 and serves as the host of TV Diner, a restaurant review show airing on NECN. “I’m excited to join my colleagues in public broadcasting and help celebrate the exceptional students on High School Quiz Show.”

Also on February 13, WGBH will also air a marathon of last year's shows beginning at 3 p.m.
