UMass Education Support Professional is MTA ESP of the Year
Anita Thompson, who works in the Purchasing/Procurement Department at UMass Boston and is a member of the Classified Staff Union (CSU), has been named MTA's ESP of the Year for 2010.
In her nomination, CSU president Shauna Lee Manning wrote:
“Anita is the consummate professional and has done volumes to enhance the image of Classified Staff on campus. She is a passionate advocate for CSU members and presents herself in an assertive yet dignified matter. Anita always checks her facts so when she speaks she has high credibility with both management and members. She enhances the ESP image with her strong work ethic and commitment to the university and union….
“Anita reminds university employees that as union members they have access to procedures laid out in their contract, and that the union stands with them. Anita consistently works to move people from despair and into action to resolve problems."
Thompson is also a student in the university’s Labor Studies Program and has earned a certificate in union administration on her way to a full degree. The ESP of the Year Award was presented by Donna Johnson, who sits on the MTA Executive Committee, chairs the MTA ESP Committee and heads her union, the University Staff Association at UMass Amherst.
Thompson was honored during MTA's annual ESP Conference, April 9 & 10 in Hyannis. More than 330 ESP members from across the state were in attendance.
