2009 Human & Civil Rights Awards winners
The MTA Human & Civil Rights Committee honored Horace Seldon with the Louise Gaskins Lifetime Civil Rights Award and the Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award, April 30 in Boston. Seldon is a civil rights activist and a professor and founder of Community Change Inc. The Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award was presented to MTA member Jacqueline M. Coogan, a retired teacher from Everett, who was recognized for her work with youth in Everett as well as her efforts to ensure health care for children in her region.
Also during the awards dinner, The Massachusetts Child presented its Exemplary Benefactor Award to Alan Jacobson, a past president of the MTA-sponsored charity and a guidance counselor at Waltham High School.
The annual MTA Human & Civil Rights Awards Dinner is attended by educators and education support professionals from across the state and honors MTA members and others who have put their lives, employment or professional careers on the line in defense of human and civil rights.
