House bill would give nurses Professional Teacher Status
The Massachusetts House of Representatives voted unanimously May 10 in favor of a bill to allow school nurses to be granted Professional Teacher Status (PTS).
Rep. Christine Canavan (D-Brockton), the bill's main sponsor, spoke on behalf of school nurses and their right to be granted PTS on the same basis as teachers and other school professionals who are required to be certified by the state.
The bill, part of the MTA's legislative package, now moves to the Senate. MTA members interested in this legislation should contact their state senator to support the bill and should also thank their state representative for voting to pass the bill.
