Government Pension Offset/Windfall Elimination Provision activites

From April 10 to April 21, members of Congress will be on recess and back in their districts.  This is the time for you to thank Senators Kennedy and Kerry and your own congressman for their support of H.R. 147 and S. 619 that repeal the GOP/WEP offsets.

Because the members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation are all cosponsors of this legislation, now is a good opportunity to say, "Thank you."

Go to for e-mail addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses for members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation.  Thank them for co-sponsoring legislation to repeal the GPO and WEP.  Ask them to continue to work for passage of this important legislation.

The Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) penalize people who have dedicated their lives to public service by taking away benefits they have earned.

The GPO reduces public employees' Social Security spousal or survivor benefits by two-thirds of their public pension.  The WEP reduces the earned Social Security benefits of an individual who also receives a public pension from a job not covered by Social Security.
